"Oghur" is a way of referring to the linguistic group represented at present only by the Chuvash people of European Russia. The Chuvashes are thought to descend from a mix of indigenous Finno-Ugric peoples and an early branch (or branches) of (proto-)Turkic speakers who had previously invaded the North Caucasus. I have no idea where their Turkic-speaking ancestors may have dwelt before they entered the vicinity of the North Caucasus. "Oghur" is cognate with "Oghuz," a name for the major branch of Turkic peoples/dialects in Southwestern Asia (including e.g. Ottoman Turks). The "Oghur" languages, like Chuvash, are distinguished from the main body of Turkic languages by their having /r/ where other Turkic languages have /z/ and /l/ where other Turkic languages have /ʃ/ ("sh," "ş"). For this reason, the Oghur branch of Turkic is also called "lir Turkic" as opposed to "shaz Turkic." |
