Sinicised northern ethnics of premodern times according to Lewis (pp. 200-1): - Han period: Xiongnu and non-Han hostages got Chinese names - northern Wei dynasty: Tuoba elite was ordered by their ruler to adopt Chinese names - Tang period: -- the Li family constructed Han ancestry in order to consolidate its imperial rule, similar practices are known from their allies -- since late Tang elites were devoid of local power bases, they "perished with the Tang government" (p. 206) => that way non-Han eiltes might have become Han commoners (I'm thinking of deviant northern Han y-chromosomes... ) |
