Conclusions : - It is indeed possible, if difficult, to test the Agglutination Hypothesis empirically. - Result : no statistically significant correlation between Cumulation, Alternation and Suppletion. - I have not shown that the Agglutination Hypothesis is wrong ; but the burden of proof is now on those who believe it is correct. - There are features that can be used to characterize whole languages, e.g. affix-suppleting and stem-alternating. - Think twice before using the term "agglutinative" ! link |
