update 2010-11-4 I was under the impression that the Khitan language was still unclassified but I just it seems that actually there is general consensus that it is Para-Mongolic, a branch related to Mongolic but not part of it. I suppose Donghu, Xianpei are names that can better describe a language family consisting of Mongolic branch, Khitan, Tabgach/Touba. It's truly a fascinating discovery for me because the Donghu, Xianpei, Khitan almost have legendary status in Chinese history as deadly enemies of the Chinese; to be able to put a modern language onto these fierce "barbarians" is great in terms of appreciating history. Khitan links simple summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khitan_language book section on Para-Mongolic: http://books.google.com/books?id=GMmjLzJhA2EC&pg=PA396&lpg=PA396&dq=Para-Mongolic&source=bl&ots=Y7zjh1j32x&sig=_ifCra6UxLc2JlnCJpGVC_jeYq4&hl=en&ei=WBbTTPT5OJP0tgPIw7SGCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBMQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Para-Mongolic&f=false review of above book: http://www.jstor.org/pss/25132370 "Once Again on Khitan Words in Chinese-Khitan Mixed Verses" http://www.akademiai.com/content/r31ut3745r487367/ "HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRE-DYNASTIC KHITAN" https://www.doria.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/829/historic.pdf?...1 Edited by ren, Nov 4 2010, 09:34:19 PM.
