During the coldest periods of the Ice Age (including the period between about 80 and 15 kya), drops in sea level caused these three landmasses to be connected into a single large one called Sahul.  Sahul was never connected to mainland Asia.  (The islands of Java, Sumatra and Borneo were also joined into a single landmass, called Sunda, which was part of mainland Asia.)
