The "gypsy" y-chromosomes and their spread indicate a strong correlation between ethnic heritage and its influence on people's place in social hierarchy from India to Europe. One remarkable feature of all studied "gypsy" populations seems to be the lack of R1a and the presence of H1. The Lambadi sample is from Andhra Pradesh, but Lambadi are said to have come from Gujarat or Rajasthan: http://hpgl.stanford.edu/publications/AJHG...72_p313-332.pdf http://www.looksmartcollege.com/p/articles...704/ai_n8775016 The origin of the Romani in Europe is unclear. I had the opportunity to check how Romani in Czech Republic and Bulgaria look. They reminded me people from Gujarat rather than South Indians. As follows a study on those in Bulgaria, Lithuania and Spain: http://hpgl.stanford.edu/publications/AJHG..._p1314-1331.pdf "Gypsies" in Uzbekistan: http://hpgl.stanford.edu/publications/PNAS..._v98_p10244.pdf |
